B'day treat for the renowned maestro
by ANJANA GAMAGE

Pandith W.D. Amaradeva

He is a master musician whose service to the country spans a period of five decades. He was the most influential force in forming what could be called a truly Sri Lankan music with a unique national character and identity. His creations have captured the hearts of several generations of music lovers, both young and old.

The so-called maestro in Sinhala music will celebrate his 73rd birthday in a unique way. Dr. Pandith W.D. Amaradeva whose birthday falls on December 5, will offer scholarships to poor, needy children who are talented in music through the Amaradeva Foundation.

"There would not be an Amaradeva, if I did not get a such scholarship from the Lankadeepa newspaper in 1952. At that time, the scholarship was founded by the editor of Lankadeepa D.B. Dhanapala. With the help of the scholarship, I went to Bhathkande University in Lucknow, India to obtain higher education in music. Therefore, I know I have achieved all those merits because of the common people in this country whose generosity enabled me to study music in India," said the maestro recalling his past.

"I have a great wish to fulfil in my life. I would like to see a new generation in the field of music. I believe that my dream will come true with the help of people in all corners of Sri Lanka and their supportive hand to the Amaradeva Foundation."

A special musical extravaganza Amaraguru Janma Prasadini Ulela has been scheduled in commemoration with the maestro's 73rd birthday to be held on December 5 at the auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre. Fifteen renowned artistes will sing melodies composed by maestro Amaradeva as a special birthday treat.

Amaradeva Foundation is run by the Public Trustee Department under the supervision of the head of the public trustee. "Anyone who wishes to contribute their money or talent to the Amaradeva Foundation, can send it by a cheque or in a money order to the Head of the Public Trustee, No. 2, Buller's Lane, Colombo 7.
